Dr Emiliano Espinar

(LdoVet CertEP CertISELP MRCVS)

Emiliano graduated from Cordoba University in 1997. Following an externship at the University of Hannover in Germany, he moved to Ireland to taste the ‘rural’ mixed practice. He then moved to England where he had the opportunity to specialise in equine practice for four years before moving back home to Spain with his wife. They both started their own practice with great success based at Mijas racetrack. Here, race horses, lameness work and a bit of sunshine in between kept him very busy. In 2009 he returned to England and settled in Berkshire with his family. He worked in a large equine referral practice, investigating and treating a range of equines from sport horses to show ponies. He then started Espinar Equine Associates, where he feels he can offer a more personal touch. Emiliano is a dedicated equine veterinary surgeon with extensive knowledge and experience. He particularly enjoys the challenges of lameness and performance issues, diagnostic imaging, pre-purchase examinations (vettings) as well as certain standing surgeries such as dental extractions. Whilst in England, he was awarded an Equine Certificate in Equine Practice by the RCVS and is an RCVS Advanced Practitioner. He has also become a certified member of ISELP (the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology). This commends his expertise with lameness and equine performance issues. He is also an FEI Permitted Treating Veterinarian. One of his main principles is clear communication with owners. He likes taking the time to answer questions, happily sharing his knowledge in order to help. Alongside hours of CPD, he regularly attends courses in his commitment to being at the forefront of equine veterinary care. Family and outdoor sporting activities are his favourite. He is always up to a challenge, importantly in good company!

Mel McKernan

RVN, Practice Manager and SQP

Mel has been involved with horses all her life and always had a keen interest in veterinary aspects. She started work in a small animal practice and honed her receptionist skills, before spending some time in Nova Scotia, Canada working with Fjord horses. She then had the amazing opportunity to join Emiliano (who had been her vet for many years) when he set up his own mobile equine veterinary practice.

Mel has been with Espinar Equine right from the start, and is a Registered Equine Veterinary Nurse and an SQP. Amongst other things she is responsible for administration in the office such as answering the phone, booking visits, doing accounts and cleaning equipment. When she’s been good, she is allowed out of the office to accompany Emiliano on call, assisting with x-rays and other procedures which she really enjoys, and takes great pleasure in keeping everything tidy and running smoothly from visit to visit. She likes meeting and talking with clients and is always happy to help answer any queries, using her skills to be an asset to the team at Espinar Equine.

A love of horses, fresh air, peaceful countryside walks, Pilates, CrossFit and a bit of cycling keep her entertained!

Max Schuster

BVetMed MRCVS – Veterinary Locum & OOH Associate

Max graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2018 and specialised in equine practice from the start. He has worked at a number of equine practices in Shropshire and Hertfordshire before settling down in Berkshire with his partner.

Max has always treated a range of equines from racehorses to donkeys and likes to get to know his patients to offer a more personal service. He particularly enjoys emergency work, so if you ever did need a vet out of working hours (and hopefully you never will) it may well be Max who comes to the rescue.  Max is also a big rugby fan, although now spends more time spectating than playing.
